David Bowie’s Blackstar: Possible Occult Interpretations

By Kyle B. Stiff

The beautifully weird video for David Bowie’s new song Blackstar may be much more than just a crazy collage of random imagery. It’s full of occult references! Meaning can be found, but only if you’re willing to strip away comfortable ideas and step into the world of gods and symbols and unexpected correlations.

First, watch Blackstar if you haven’t already. Don’t worry, it’s great, you’ll have a good time. After that, we’ll go through the imagery, then the lyrics.

At the beginning of the video, a woman with a tail discovers a dead astronaut. This could be a direct reference to “ancient aliens” or “ancient astronauts”, the popular theory that aliens had a part in mankind’s early development. Note that the woman has a tail, and is thus part animal. According to the ancient astronaut theory, the extraterrestrial Elohim or Annunaki (“those who from the heavens to earth came”) encountered primitive monkey-men, tinkered with their genes, created various slave races, and eventually settled on modern man. Notice that the woman is in awe of the skull; it is inlaid with jewels and is simply beyond mundane comprehension. She takes it to her people who are amazed, much like cavemen would be amazed by cell phones. People who are into the ancient astronaut theory often wonder at the awe primitive man must have felt looking at the rockets, space suits, and computers used by our otherworldly visitors or progenitors.

THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH 1976 British Lion film with David Bowie

Or, if you want to skip the ancient aliens theory and go for straight symbolism, the animal-woman might be an artist, one of those visionaries who sees what normal people can’t see. She looks at death and wonders at the journey that lies beyond the place where we can’t look. Instead of looking into the black pits in the eyes of the skull and being horrified by her own inevitable demise (and developing a bunch of annoying neuroses), she sees something beautiful and mysterious. She brings back her findings to her people, which is what all artists are supposed to do, and they get a kick out of it, which is what a properly entertained and enlightened audience should do.

Next we see David Bowie with his eyes covered and false eyes in their place. I think this is a Gnostic reference. The Gnostics were an early Christian sect – quite possibly even the original Christian sect, depending on who you ask. Their writings would seem strange and disturbing to modern day Christians because the Gnostics believed that the God of the Old Testament was an evil demon. According to the Gnostics, he was created by accident and, because he was blind and demented, he couldn’t see any other gods, thus he believed that he was the only god in existence. From that perspective, a lot of the asshole-ish stuff done by the God of the Old Testament makes a little more sense.

201115_david_bowie_new_blackstar_750

The God of the Old Testament is known by many names, like Yahweh, but the Gnostics called him Yaldabaoth. Sounds like something from the Cthulu mythos, doesn’t it? This demented god-creature spawned other creatures like itself, and they were called archons, which is Greek for “ruler”. It’s generally agreed in the occult world that archons are parasites from a “higher dimension” who feed on human energy. This explains why Bowie is in a room full of people who are shaking and jerking around. What seems like random weirdness may actually be a representation of people being worked up by various dramas and rituals before being milked of etheric energy. If you’ve ever been on a battlefield or watched a large sporting event or attended a megachurch, then from a Gnostic perspective you could assume that there were god-critters floating overhead and sucking on the energy generated by the excited human livestock.

We see Bowie holding up some kind of holy book. Keeping in mind that archons are parasites that survive by manipulating groups of people, then of course they would have to take over religions and use them for evil purposes. It doesn’t take a great leap of logic to assume that most religions are born out of a sense of awe and appreciation for the great mystery of existence. There’s nothing bad about that. It takes a lot of work by a lot of dummies to go from awe and reverence to killing and torturing people, and archons love manipulating dummies. Dummies are “blind,” they lack “eyes to see and ears to hear” as Christ said, and they are easily worked up by drama and narratives of conflict. When they hear Crowley say “every man and every woman is a star” or Christ say “you are gods” it goes right over their heads. They like the Old Testament stuff about people being born into sin; it’s easy for them to feel existential guilt, guilt about sex, self-deflating thoughts, general repression issues, things like that.

Yaldabaoth

At the end of the video, we see scarecrows crucified in a field. They’re scary; even Bowie (as Yaldabaoth) is freaked out by them. This could indicate the Gnostic idea that Christ existed in opposition to the demon-god of the Old Testament. Christ came to spread gnosis, or wisdom / enlightenment, rather than cleanse people of sins (to the Gnostics, sin was a state of ignorance). So at the end of the video, it’s like we’re seeing a spiritual battle, and it’s frightening. Note that early Christians were hunted down, and all Gnostics were most likely exterminated, once the archons infected the original version of Christianity and turned it into the demon-worshipping death-cult it has become… that is, according to the modern Gnostic renaissance.

Now let’s look at some lyrics. I’m going to blast through a bunch of them, but not all of them, in absolutely no particular order.

I’m a black star

This is repeated many times. The idea of a “black sun” has a ton of different meanings from many different cultures, but here’s an interesting alchemical take on it. In alchemy, many of their illustrations feature the sun in various states of color. This corresponds with different stages of breaking down matter for experiments, or it could correspond with the state of a human being as he develops through life. In alchemy, a “black sun” is the process of blackening that something can go through, perhaps through burning or, in the case of a living being, suffering. The black sun is also referred to as a “crow’s head”, so the crucifixion of the scarecrows, if seen from that perspective, might make a little more sense. The Christ-figure is scaring away Yaldabaoth from the field of crops (or humans) which he has been farming for etheric energy.

I Am the Great I Am

In Hebrew, Yahweh can be translated into “I am”. This comes from the Book of Genesis, when Moses asked for the name of the being giving him orders, and it responded, “I am that I am”

or

Yod He Vav He

or

YHVH

or

Yahweh

This could be an ultimate assertion of existence, or even a monotheistic claim of isolated existence, as in, “There are no other gods but me.” This is also a great thing to say during a magickal ritual; you’re becoming the focus of the entire universe and thus have power over matter.

Again, the Gnostic perspective is that there are many gods, but Yaldabaoth, being blind and demented, believed he was alone.

david-bowie

Something happened on the day he died

Spirit rose a metre and stepped aside

Somebody else took his place, and bravely cried

I’m a blackstar, I’m a blackstar

This could have to do with the hijacking of a spiritual movement by dummies or archons. The death of Christ, who told people that they were gods and that they would eventually do greater things than he did, was taken over by the same sort of fanatical guilt-mongers who killed him in the first place. There’s not much difference between right-wing evangelical Christianity and hardcore Judaism (and angry Islam), is there?

ru-0-r-650,0-n-xj21840300EY4_david_bowie_blackstar

Take your passport and shoes

And your sedatives, boo

You’re a flash in the pan

I’m the great I am

Passports and shoes are necessary for travelling across borders, from one “world” to another. If your means of spiritual travel are taken away, then you’re going to incarnate in the same realm over and over again, suffering endlessly, milked and harvested by parasites who think they’re gods.

EarthMoon.png

We were born upside-down

Born the wrong way ‘round

This could be like a curse. In a protective pentagram, you can fit the image of a human being, with the head and limbs corresponding to the points on the star. But if you turn the pentagram upside down (making it “Satanic”) then the man inside is also turned upside down. He is humiliated, his spirit on the bottom and more earthly elements taking precedence up top.

There’s also many many mentions of eyes, as well as shots of eyes. This is a pretty ubiquitous image in occult lore, and can mean many things. My favorite thing to focus on with eye imagery is that moment of personal transformation when you strip away all elements of yourself, including your goofy job and silly political beliefs and the dumb stuff in your brain that you think makes up “you”, and all you have left is the “observer”. It’s the part of you that can’t be roped in by drama and silly stuff, which your mind latches onto and thinks is so important. It’s the part of you that is you but is also outside of you, observing, and is eternal.

  1. Woah, crazy connection between David Bowie and Kyle B. Stiff! So I’m planning on releasing Demonworld Book Six: The Love of Tyrants on my birthday, January 9. I noticed on Bowie’s official twitter that his new album is set to release on January 8. I looked him up on wikipedia and, sure enough, January 8 is his birthday! Looks like two Capricorns are setting themselves up for some “look at what I’ve accomplished” themed birthdays!

    • Excellent post, I’m glad I found it, I actually found it in a Bowie google search! I think I had seen you post some things in the Bowie video thread? Many people are analyzing the video but I’d have to say that you are pretty much on the money. I never thought that was Major Tom lol. You should post segments of this in that thread. Also did you see the loons posting 13 part series attacking the video as Bowie being Illuminati and satanic?

      • Thanks Mark, that’s so nice! Jeez I didn’t know the loons were taking it that far. I watched part of a video about playing it backwards and apparently Bowie says something in French that has to do with Satan… I didn’t make it all the way through the video because my head was shaking back and forth so hard that my neck started to hurt. Ha! But then again, I guess I don’t really have the right to make fun of those people, because a few years ago I would have been right there with them, seeing Satan everywhere! I wasn’t even Christian, just kind of dopey and fearful I guess. Ugh, so embarrassing! But I guess that’s all part of growing up, isn’t it?

Plus when he claimed to raise a man from the dead in Africa that was a dead give away lol. Christians are so damn fowl and hypocritical it drives me crazy! When I was born again, I felt guilty about everything, I smoked then and felt guilty about that, what an awful cult religion is.

  2. I think this is more to do with each person’s spiritual sun, i.e. the Black Star, the sun behind the sun, noting every man and women is a star. It is also to do with the initiation of each person rising from their earthly bonds in which they are bound to the cross of manifestation, the scarecrow, and blind, the blindfold, to the light, gnosis. He is going through the process of Negrido and Putrefaction. The body is subsumed in the black star while the head remains and is elevated. He dies and is risen in himself. He is upside down walking on his hands in the underworld eating the excrement of the world above. When he rises above the underworld he becomes upright and has risen. He takes his shoes and his passport and goeth for he is in himself the Way. Bowie displays that he knows more than he is letting on here.

    • Hey Ralph, you’re right, but I don’t think the video is only showing the process, it’s also telling a story. At least that’s what my brain focuses on. There’s a little too much glee when the blindfold comes off and Bowie brags about taking your passport and shoes and how you’re just a flash in the pan whereas he’s the GREAT I AM. I don’t think a person who’s achieved gnosis would act like that, but a person who’s achieved false or premature enlightenment would. Have you ever been in a bar and listen to a drunk person with a smug look on their face talk about a scientific principle (which those *other* people don’t understand!) or something amazing that a liberal politician said (those *other* people don’t get it!)? Of course if you dig a little, it’s always pretty obvious that that person lives a pretty bad life, they’re unhappy, and they desperately want to be seen as enlightened or better than others or, sadly enough, just deserving of love or praise. I think true gnosis would go hand in hand with a calm demeanor, because the person can’t be touched by stuff from the lower realms.

Hey you know what, maybe the literal black star that we see, the one where the skeleton floats toward it, maybe that is the process you’re talking about. Maybe the dead astronaut actually did go through this process, but the only thing the normal people can do is worship the corpse (the jewel-encrusted skull). The people can’t talk about that guy’s story because it’s beyond their understanding, all they can do is dance and shake in appreciation of the mysterious process. But then you have a huckster archon step in and say “I’ll interpret this for you guys, just listen to me, I can explain how it’s done.” And he says “I’m a blackstar” (a god) but in reality the blackstar is within (we are all gods).

  3. The “We were born upside-down, Born the wrong way ‘round” is probably meant literally. All other mammals are born body first, head last. Humans are born head first. In fact if the baby is breeched (turned around backwards inside the womb), they have to be turned around to be born safely.

    • It could be literal, but that makes me think of how amazing it is when an artist really connects with their music at one hundred percent, and they’ve reached a point where they can make honest art, and the end result is something that can be appreciated on multiple levels, even levels unintended (on a conscious level) by the artist. Someone could look at Lewis Carroll’s through the looking glass and see a delightful children’s story, someone else might see an intense breakdown of human psychology, someone else might see the ridonko jibberish of a mathematician, someone else might see an artist delighting in the visions projected within his own head, someone else might see a crazy person shackled by reality and shouting against it, someone else might see someone cranking out something so they can make a little money without having to clock in at a factory… and they would all be right! Remember in Bhagavad Gita when Krishna revealed his face to Arjuna, showing him that his best friend was in fact God, he didn’t see one true and perfect face, he saw a being in a fractal form, millions of faces and limbs doing every possible thing that can be done, feeling every emotion, witnessing every sight.

This world! It’s too much! Too much!

      • Stick with only one book, the KJV Bible? Consider that when God made fish, he didn’t make one perfect fish, he made a zillion species. He didn’t make one perfect bird, nor did he make a bunch of “bad birds” that must be driven to extinction in order to cleanse creation – no, he made a zillion species. He didn’t make one person with one perfect mind filled with correct ideas (step away from the mirror, sir, I’m not talking about you!), again, he made a world full of unique people that all think differently. It’s the same with the books that we write. There’s not one perfect one, but a zillion. KJV Bible gives an interesting snapshot of a group of people obviously impressed with their own race, all of it selected and arranged by a particular set of Middle Ages Europeans. But that’s just one book. Are you so perfect, so beyond reproach, that you can declare something with utter finality? Or wait… maybe you can… oh my God, I just realized who you are! You are the Christ, Immanuel, the One Perfect man! Surely your anger is the crown of creation!

Just kidding, sorry. Oh yeah, another thing I just thought of: Consider that the love they sing about in every pop song may be about the love that the singer feels for God, or for creation in general. Wooooooow (mind blown)!

So we might actually get to hear the full “Blackstar” song which clocked in at 11 minutes. I-Tunes won’t allow any songs over 10 minutes so they had to trim it. Don’t you just love corporate control? 5. Why not take a look at Bowie’s erudite reading list and realise that his interest in theology, gnosticism , Jung and the esoteric goes back decades. If you were at all familiar with the lyrics to his songs you’d realise he’s long had an interest in religious matters. That would be better than projecting your own skewered understanding of these topics onto his last video.

But I did know that, and also, that isn’t the point of this piece. I’ve been on the internet a time or two and I can tell when someone is fishing for an argument! Plus, just look at his tone. It’s that dopey, angry “Youtube comments section” tone where it doesn’t matter what in particular the person is talking about – only the argument matters. I’m not really into that.

      • In Space Oddity Bowie – The Astronaut Major Tom – tells us that : “I’m stepping through the door. And I’m floating. In a most peculiar way. And the stars look very different today.” In the beginning of the Blackstar video the Astronaut is floating in a most peculiar way to a star that looks very different today. (I think it’s an eclipse – a rich image.) As the Lazarus video ends, Bowie makes sure that we know he is stepping back through the door. He’s dancing. He’s calm. He has reached psychological acceptance. In so doing, he also is completing a type of lifetime uroborus. In Kundalini Yoga this is the snake (which sheds it skin and is rejuvenated) holds it’s own tail in it’s mouth. This completes – on the chakra system – the journey of the spiritual and corporal becoming one. (Rich imagery abounds.) In this act, Bowie completes a physical circle of his life, no longer linear with beginning and end, but a circle which represents eternity. He is now eternal in our hearts and minds. He is eternal in his art. His is eternal as his physical form is changed to energy in the fundamental celebration of quantum physics E=MC2. (Blindingly rich in imagery).

It’s not a cartoon where guys in red shirts have to be destroyed by guys in blue shirts.

      • The lyrics about being born upside down also evokes the Tarot deck card of The Hanged Man. ” The Hanged Man (XII) is the twelfth trump or Major Arcana card in most traditional Tarot decks. It depicts a pittura infamante (pronounced [pitˈtuːra iɱfaˈmante]), a shameful image of a traitor being punished in a manner common at the time for traitors in Italy. Some versions portray Judas, and include the bags of silver in his hands (obvious imagery of rebel rebel who may be conflicted for embracing consumerism and being worth $230,000,000.” Wikipedia. The hanged man forms a tau cross. The living tree gallows and hanged man form a cross in the shape of the letter “T”. (Kabbalah tree of life/chakra system?)

Bowie spoke often throughout his life in interviews of his sense of alienation and being misunderstood or not accepted – Especially by those Americans who are closed minded as to sexuality and religion. The lyrics in Blackstar speak to this sense he felt of being misused in being misunderstood. There’s a reason he turned to drugs when he adopted his most unique personas. It’s hard to be unique (embracing personal truth), not normal (being a vision teller), and above the cultural conventions (like an angel). (Thankfully, Fripp and Eno – erudite artists, grounded in classics and soaring creativity, helped him through his existential crisis to remain with us another almost 40 years.) He says in Blackstar: “How many times does an angel fall? How many people lie instead of talking tall? He trod on sacred ground, he cried loud into the crowd. (I’m a blackstar, I’m a blackstar, I’m not a gangstar).

Painful. Completely vulnerable. And at the same time, couched in the inkling of transformation – the symbology of protective angels, the delight being tall and all seeing, the sublime experience of walking on Sacred Ground, one with humanity and time. Bowie practiced Tibetan Buddhism in the 60s and 70s. He would be familiar with being attuned to the sacred. Poor guy. You just want to hug him and comfort him, and share with him a moment of repose. Like the Egyptian goddess Isis holding her dead husband Osiris, waiting for inspiration to bring him back to life.

Denree your knowledge is pretty astounding, I can tell you have one of those brains that’s made to piece things together, taking disparate chunks and forming a cohesive whole. This isn’t exactly about Bowie, but it’s a “hanged man” theory I heard once (can’t remember where). You know Christ hung on a cross between two thieves. The theory this person had was that the thief on one side was the past and the other thief was the future, meaning that dwelling on the future and past rob us of fully experiencing the NOW. The Christ, the enlightened being, is able to be in the NOW and fully experience the Hellraiser-like full potential of being, which is a very Buddhist idea.

        Just a thought!

the story is that Odin, the Allfather, hung from the tree by his ankle (of his own volition) to attain enlightenment from the knowledge of the runes carved into the trunk below. he also pierced his own side with a spear and did not take any kind of sustenance as he stared into the dark waters of the well beneath him, waiting for the runes to reveal themselves to him. he did so for nine days and nights and on the ninth night the runes appeared to him in the waters and with them, their secrets and mysteries along with.

There are lower entities (fourth sub-planes) that attach quite happily and gorge upon fear, drama, sexual tensions, pain, anxiety, loss, and there are very much a section today know as the Global Elite who are rulers of the Lunar worlds and it may sound completely outlandish however I know intuitively I am bang on the money.
We are witnessing a crisis in humanity and Bowie has created as his last offering, an insight to symbolic collectivisation of civilisation en masse, in groups that he has somehow acknowledged and embellished his completed essays of his own Gnostic references and journeying, however I related to the fear and blacked out eyes, soulless almost, the soul has not entered quite and from my reading of Vera Stanley Alder and Alice Bailey books, that are very poignant esoterica Ancient/Ageless wisdoms and teachings that were suppressed by religious and ruling establishments to keep us in the dark ages. Bailey & Alder as educators have allowed the creative and extraordinary understandings of how one thinks to form, and how the intracellular soul attaches to ones sovereignty as an individual to govern by the Divine consciousness using magnetism and radiation as the precursor to Solar Logos and the Lord of the World. WE humans are aspirants, not all in our incarnations as we tend to be re-incarnated in our relationship with our dependence on how we wake up and how we choose to live our life – fearlessly or in fear?,
We are governed by our 7 rays cosmically, astrologically, esoterically and spiritually. Our own body, soul, personality, mind, chakras, are enteric, astral, mind, soul, have initiations and karmic laws to overcome…I was disturbed as well as felt like I understood deep down his joining up of the dots in his estoterical beliefs of his cumulative individual sum up. Unique to the end. Now he will be meeting his makers and we here on Mother Earth will continue to rise our vibrations to purification, and joyful expression and intellectual intuitive restoration of our senses, all our governed senses, so that we can leave the world in a better place than those supposed leaders who are psychopaths/heartless and worshippers of Money Gods, false Gods, Fear models to keep us living in duplicitous, divide & conquer, fear/war mongering, drop bombs, terrorise, own the MSM, own everything and unleash hell in to world…That is archon, that is lower entity energy fields, and this is possibly why some references were suggested to Bowies understanding of the Global Elite and their perversions on humanity and Sofia Gaia…However, we are awake and the its bloggers like you kyleb, that are joining up your own dots intuitively…I do suggest if you haven’t already to read those aforementioned authors etc…easy peasy. Great stuff!

    • Insightful comment. The perennial philosophies – the esoteric branches of Yoga, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam all have at root very similar root descriptions of reality and the psyche. You comments speak to me on the level of Shakti Yoga (Kundalini) and Tantric Buddhism. No doubt we as humanity are on a black course. I find Bowie has much to inspire us to individual and global transformation. Thanks for discussing that aspect.

    • Hey Jessica, good point! I actually did think about the black sun / Saturn angle but… I wasn’t sure how to fit it! The main thing I saw was the Gnostic stuff, and as far as I know, they weren’t down with astrology or planet watching, the general idea being that once you achieve gnosis, astrology has no effect on you (ALLEGEDLY, of course!). But I did think of the black star / Saturn thing as like a wink to other people who were “in the know”, like he was saying, “Yeah, I’m a wizard too.”

But correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Saturn like the alternative to mainstream religion “sun worship”?

    • I usually don’t get into the prediction stuff. It would be interesting if something like that worked out, but when you think about it, has one single person ever accurately predicted anything? Like, ever? And even when someone does seem to predict something in retrospect, isn’t it ALWAYS in retrospect that it makes sense? When you take a look at Nostradamus, it’s always like, “The man in the blue hat shall cross the three waters” and then you can go back and say that it was so and so invading some nation, but it’s only in retrospect – beforehand, it never made any sense at all! So yeah, I usually stay out of it.

  15. Interesting article, I agree with most of the people’s interpretations too. I don’t fully understand the symbolism but I follow what David Icke says, He was pretty young getting into the industry so it would be good to have a whole overview of the symbolism in his work. I’ve noticed so much imagery in Taylor Swift and all these dodgy artists today, these articles really do help, thanks!

    • When I was younger, I thought it was possible that there was a circle of dudes who used their power and influence to get these symbols and themes put into movies and music… I mean, it’s so weird how this stuff works out. These days, I’m thinking that the themes and recurring images are coming out of a place we don’t understand. Like some kind of higher dimension that this one is tucked inside of, like a flat playing board with different themes being moved around like chess pieces. I don’t know. It’s certainly odd, and exciting, and I don’t think you have to be crazy to be interested in this stuff, but you do have to have a brain that’s wired a certain way and crazy can’t hurt when it comes to this field. You know what I mean?

      • Carl Jung observed the same thing. Repeating symbols and mythologies across cultures. He calls them ‘archetype’. For example the nurturing mother. The hero’s journey. Death and renewal. Tied to observations of nature, I think, expressed at the dawn of civilization 10,000 or so years ago and transmuted through cultures. I see a common core. Jung thought they sprang up in unconnected civilizations. Could be true, as an expression of our common genetic ancestry which takes expression.

  16. Wonderful track and video and certainly got me interested from a symbology point of view.

The first line “in the villa of Ormen” got me researching the story about King Olaf of Norway forced attempted conversion to Christianity and then murder of a Seior priest called Raud The Strong. From Seior you get the “shamanic trembling” circular dance predominately performed by women and featured in the video which led me to review the Gnosticism elements, particularly the Mandaeans, in the video and then back to solar deities (maybe Isis holding the skull?) and then the other “estoteric” Occult references, particular the numerology of 12 and 3. Kind of guessing that that is Herod’s Palace at the end as well.

A great piece of art gets you thinking, this is a great piece of art!

  17. Very interesting, and I’ve read a few more interpretations of the imagery of this video. What I have not stumbled upon is the reference to Mary Magdalene, her supposed skull being kept in what looks very much like an astronauts helmet. It is not adorned with gems like in the video, however such embellishment to a skull or skeleton is typical for relics of saints. From wikipedia on M M – “…Magdalene abounded in riches, and because delight is fellow to riches and abundance of things; and for so much as she shone in beauty greatly, and in riches, so much the more she submitted her body to delight, and therefore she lost her right name, and was called customably a sinner.” // “The manuscript [Gospel of Tomas] gives 114 “secret teachings” of Jesus. Mary is mentioned briefly in saying 21. Here, Mary asks Jesus, “Whom are your disciples like?” Jesus responds, “They are like children who have settled in a field which is not theirs. When the owners of the field come, they will say, ‘Let us have back our field.’ They (will) undress in their presence in order to let them have back their field and to give it back to them”. Following this, Jesus continues his explanation with a parable about the owner of a house and a thief, ending with the common rhetoric, “Whoever has ears to hear let him hear”. The covering of the eyes in the video hints at the fact that when you loose one of your sense perceptions the ones you are left with becomes stronger as to compensate. Lazarus has also strong connections to Mary of course. 🙂

  18. Very interesting! I’ve read a few interpretations of the video the last few days but none that concerns the connections to Mary Magdalene, whose supposed skull is kept in St Maximin Basilica in France in what looks a lot like an astronauts helmet. It is not adorned with gems like in the video, but this form of embellishment of the relics of saints is very common. From wikipedia – “…the blessed Mary Magdalene, desirous of sovereign contemplation, sought a right sharp desert, and took a place which was ordained by the angel of God, and abode there by the space of thirty years without knowledge of anybody. In which place she had no comfort of running water, ne solace of trees, ne of herbs. And that was because our Redeemer did do show it openly, that he had ordained for her refection celestial, and no bodily meats. And every day at every hour canonical she was lifted up in the air of angels, and heard the glorious song of the heavenly companies with her bodily ears. Of which she was fed and filled with right sweet meats, and then was brought again by the angels unto her proper place, in such wise as she had no need of corporal nourishing.” // “…Magdalene abounded in riches, and because delight is fellow to riches and abundance of things; and for so much as she shone in beauty greatly, and in riches, so much the more she submitted her body to delight, and therefore she lost her right name, and was called customably a sinner.” // “As Mary of Bethany, she is shown as present at the Resurrection of Lazarus, her brother” // “The manuscript [Gospel of Thomas] gives 114 “secret teachings” of Jesus. Following this, Jesus continues his explanation with a parable about the owner of a house and a thief, ending with the common rhetoric, “Whoever has ears to hear let him hear”.” The covering of the eyes in the video; When one sense perception is taken away the one’s which are left become heightened and stronger as to compensate for the loss [of eyes for ears in this matter perhaps]. There’s so much more that correlates when you look into it. 🙂

    • Wow, I didn’t realize that at all, thanks SB! I guess I assumed it was in the Old Testament because there are a lot of instances where God seems unreasonably angry at the people He’s created, despite being pretty satisfied with them in the very beginning. So is being born into sin a concept from Paul, then?

  22. While I love these spiritual interpretations, I wonder if this might also be more auto biographical? Bowie finds his spaceman, major Tom or whatever..then he proceeds to make a religion out of it..his career as rock star. The woman with a tail is Bowie himself..in the dreamscape of his creativity..where he-she creates a spaceman..a 1960’s ( smiley face ), unreal ( duct taped space suit)..shabbyish, druggy astronaut. Then in the process of squeezing the creative inspiration for all the cash and fame its worth, turns it into a cash and fame religion. Or something like that. Maybe. I don’t know. I do know that I love this song and video.

  24. “The Great ‘I Am'” is a common British colloquialism synonymous with “hotshot,” as in “I don’t know why he’s walking around like he’s The Great “I Am,” what’s he ever done? Doesn’t mean Bowie wasn’t using it in both senses simultaneously, but the primary use should be noted.
YHVH, יהוה, the tetragrammaton, has great significance in western occultism, but it is not the named God gave to Moses as He spoke to him from the burning bush, translated into English as “I Am.” This name of God is Eheyeh, אהיה. While also significant in western occultism, it lacks the extensive qabalistic correspondences of YHVH, and is not used as noted in the article.

    • Yeah I need to change the YHVH bit to Eheyeh, as a couple of people with “eyes to see and ears to hear” have already corrected me on that. Oops!

And that’s wild about the British slang! I wonder how many people using it today know that it comes from ancient tomes written by desert wanderers getting baked on hallucinogens and talking to hyperdimensional entities spreading mind viruses throughout the cosmos?

  25. I think another angle would be the references to chaos. There is the symbol of the album which could be perceived as a sigil. Often in the world of chaos, symbols that are not completely understood by the viewer, hold a greater power. There is then the broken pieces of the star that is found under the black star. This would be the key to the symbol.

Then the binding of his eyes which to me could mean a binding, even more so because you find the buttons over his eyes (two things tied together by a third unique thread). When he is bound by a false since of freedom, the ones under him are manipulated. When the binding is removed from his eyes, man follows his direction of focus. Then when you match this up with kyles Gnostic and alchemy references it makes since. Bind the fake god to the world of “man,” then his spirit can no longer rise. As man evolves he moves into higher dimensions, thus living the false god alone with no source of power.

Despite all this I still feel like I’m missing a huge piece of the puzzle. I think some of the answers lie in Feng Shui, and the practices of the Tao. You see this in the setting at the beginning of the video and the elements he brings into each picture which correlates to the stages of alchemy.

I truely feel like it will take a 1000 different peoples perspective’s to full understand its meaning. He used symbolism from at least 8 different cultures and fused them into one, and I think I will take an interpretation of all of them collectively to understand this piece.

  27. I understand the bulk of your interpretations Kylie. When I first watched the video I could see many of the things you have spoken about here and interpreted them in a similar way.
However – in my own journey I have come to understand that ‘God’ and ‘Satan’ are ideas which have little to no significance in relation to greater reality. There are no ‘gods’ there is only “G()D” and ‘good/evil’ are indications of ignorance rather than actuality.
Which is to say that they exist only in relation to belief and the actions triggered by those beliefs.
The idea of serving a life/death sentence on this rock is that we learn to adjust behavior accordingly. How we ended up in this position is beside the point…it does not matter in relation to the fact that we are here and that is that (is a fact) and in relation to G()D ideas, we would do well to understand that while we possess beliefs which separate the gods from the G()D we fall short of the mark as it were, and contribute energy to the human drama as a consequence of those beliefs.
In relation to both the physical universe and Consciousness experiencing it,… while the expressions within it can be incredibly variant, what can ultimately be achieved by consciousness within it is a very narrow and purposeful thing to which a great many expressions are in ignorance and opposition about.
I speak a lot about this in my own blogs and encourage you to have a look. 🙂

    • A band member said the three scarecrows at the end of Blackstar video was about ISIS. He took it to mean the Muslim fundamental geo terrorists. In the context of what I think this video is about, death and eternal life, I conclude it points to the Egyptian goddess Isis, healer and protector and more. She gathered the pieces of the body of her husband Osiris, reassembled them missing one vital member – and brought him back to life. I also read that their the their son, the major ruling falcon god Horus, had four sons. These sons were depicted on the canopic jars which held the human organs which were removed for safe keeping in the mummification process: the stomach, intestines, lungs, and liver, all of which, it was believed, would be needed in the afterlife. There was no jar for the heart: the Egyptians believed it to be the seat of the soul, and so it was left inside the body. Of the four sons of Horus,
Imseti, the human-headed god representing the south, was represented on the jar which contained the liver and was protected by the goddess Isis. The goddess Isis!

  28. I’m not sure if anyone else has noticed it, but don’t there seem to be references in the video to T.S. Eliot’s poem “The Hollow Men”? …Particularly the “scarecrow” scene.

    http://allpoetry.com/The-Hollow-Men

    “We are the hollow men
    We are the stuffed men
    Leaning together
    Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
    Our dried voices, when
    We whisper together
    Are quiet and meaningless
    As wind in dry grass

Shape without form, shade without colour,
    Paralysed force, gesture without motion”

” Eyes I dare not meet in dreams
    In death’s dream kingdom
    These do not appear:
    There, the eyes are
    Sunlight on a broken column
    There, is a tree swinging
    And voices are
    In the wind’s singing
    More distant and more solemn
    Than a fading star.”

” Let me be no nearer
    In death’s dream kingdom
    Let me also wear
    Such deliberate disguises
    Rat’s coat, crowskin, crossed staves
    In a field
    Behaving as the wind behaves
    No nearer-
    Not that final meeting
    In the twilight kingdom”

Christ was basically saying that heaven isn’t a place you go to, it’s a state of mind. I doubt it’s an angry, judgmental, or smugly confident state of mind. It’s probably more like a state of mind that would be very appreciative of the beautiful and interesting and even scary things to be found in the world. That’s what’s so great about artists, that they have that godlike ability to create wonders for the rest of us to appreciate and think about and discuss.

  33. As a longtime Bowie fan, I am inclined to think that this is not an elaborate message about alien astronauts or Kabbalah or some specific myth. I think the message is more about his life as a “persona.” Clearly, themes of mortality, worship (FAME ?), are prevalent… but I don’t think it is a specific, clear narrative. The “in-jokes” in this video which point to the fact that one might not want to take this totally personally. The “worshipers” holding their hands like the video FASHION, and then we get a close-up of someone winking. Fashion is a video in which Bowie ridicules worshipers/followers of the latest “fad.” I think he is making a statement about the “worship” and veneration given to his various personas. Major Tom/ziggy stardust and Thin White Duke are all ‘characters.” Its worth noting that David and IMAN have both said publicly that David as a person is different from “David Bowie.” Iman has said that she married David Jones, and that David “Bowie” is a persona. Are these girls worshiping major Tom, or are we?

I think that there is a vague, semi Gnostic theme, but also a Nietzsche theme: to be one’s own God. He talks about “another” stepping up, after “he” died, and cried that they are a Black star. I think he’s saying that any one of us can step up and do what he has done. We could be the next-whatever.

Don’t get me wrong, the questions of mortality are serious ones and you can see it weighing on him. But he is also joking around at several points in the video, and he’s poking fun at the seriousness with which we take events like this (a stars death).

    • I am in agreement with your perspective. On one level. Like all art, maybe all life, there are many interpretations. The basic story is one of facing death, reviewing one’s life, creating a lasting work as gift and puzzle, and accepting death – even if just faking it. I have a Guru. She gives talks in which she tells stories, she tells jokes, she even has sound bites. She also discusses academic philosophical and yogic theory as well as relating her points to culture and nature. Not to be trite, but when six people are blind folded and led to an elephant, they describe their experience – big cylinder, long hose, rounded softness, thin rope. The foot, nose, belly and tail are all different, but are all true. They are all the elephant. But to take it into scientific knowledge, each piece of reality contains all pieces of reality in a hologram.

Bowie is the Blackstar. He had the power from fame to live out whatever he wanted and did, “I took your passport, I took your pain pills” He’s saying he was an asshole to a lot of people and never saw their faces or cared. He learned how to re-invent himself. The artistic beautiful secret of entertaining, inspiring people over and over, even at his death. I saw a confession, a telling of the truth of who he had been. He was Major Tom, Ziggy, all of them. I think he told us his truth.

I am appalled and ashamed at these so called “Christians” for passing judgment on another human being. What happens to the individual is strictly between he/she and their maker. They clearly forget the part where Jesus teaches to judge not lest ye be judged. That whole teaching has no place in their delusional world of self-righteousness. How dare you judge this man and decide where he is going or where his soul is at. If you’re so sure that your soul is Heaven bound, why worry so much about others? Worry about yourselves and leave the art to the artist.

BTW, I am a proud Catholic, I was taught love and acceptance for all. Hateful Jesus? You’re doing it wrong.

It’s a slippery slope if you start leaving bits out at will to fit a pattern you;re looking for. You could probably make another 20 anagrams by leaving out other letters. Perhaps add the ‘of’ back in as well, and Villa of Ormen could be ‘informal love’.

      • Yeah, not a big fan of anagrams, either, unless it’s purely for fun.

Hm, turns out “not a big fan” is an anagram for “boating fan”, which I guess I’m also not a big fan of. When people get on boats, they start using all kinds of bizarre lingo, and I feel like I’m watching children playing pretend, but with utmost seriousness and a hardcore disdain for fun. So maybe there is something to this anagram stuff!

  38. Kyle, fine article; you’ve certainly sparked a fascinating discussion, which is quite an achievement these days given the amount of brain-dead trolls out there. Though I have no interest in the occult I do see many Jungian elements in Bowie’s writing, first hinted at in the song Panic in Detroit from the album Aladdin Sane: “Jung the foreman prayed at work…” I think much of Bowie’s work was an attempt to integrate his own (Jungian) shadow; who better to explore this theme than a self-aware artist? Unlike too many artists, who end up trapped in a single stage persona (Alice Cooper comes to mind), thus becoming a threadbare caricature of themselves, Bowie was aware enough to use each character to get where he needed to go creatively and psychologically, then move on. Jung himself encouraged exploring the shadow as a means toward full integration of the soul, but not identifying with the shadow. The fact that Bowie was able to get himself (and his friend Iggy Pop) off drugs when so many other stars self-destructed on them is testament to his strength of character. All part of the Jungian journey toward integration and wholeness.

    • Beautiful comments seanarthurjones. I also relate to Bowie’s creativity as an expression a life of exploration according to Carl Jung. Which I wrote about earlier on this blog. Jung’s identification of archetypes – collective symbols held across cultures – is rich in meaning for conscious and subconscious development. I’m reminded of the Hero’s Journey as elucidated by Joseph Campbell in which a person goes on a dangerous and challenging (inner) journey and retrieves treasure which are brought back to share and enlighten the community. This is also the story of The Bhagavad-Gita, in which a great (psychological) battle is raging and the warrior Prince Arjuna stops on the battlefield to discuss with Lord Krishna – his guide and charioteer – what the use and meaning of battle (for enlightenment) and its destructive results (of the unaware self) is for and is it worthwhile. The answer being we all have our duty (personal journey) and our call to selfless action in service of our own and humanities self-actualization. The images also put me in mind of the song/video by Muse “Knights of Cydonia” in which the struggle for liberation is paramount in the science fiction Old West. Meaning, enrichment and integration is universal!

      Come ride with me,
      Through the veins of history,
      I’ll show you how god,
      Falls asleep on the job.

      And how can we win,
      When fools can be kings,
      Don’t waste your time,
      Or time will waste you,

No one’s gonna take me alive,
The time has come to make things right,
You and I must fight for our rights,
You and I must fight to survive,

    • Sean, thanks for the comment! Unfortunately I got so many comments that I lost track, and missed quite a few, including yours! Great, great point about Jung. Your comment struck home because on some level, I’ve always thought the concept of an artist getting stuck with one image was really ridiculous. That’s what made Bowie such an amazing wizard (in a sense)… he went through the whole tarot (if you want to think of it like that) and integrated all kinds of different aspects of himself. Wow, your words have sparked off a desire to do the same in me! Thank you!

    • I grew up listening music from the 80s, and I remember liking David Bowie. When I heard of his passing I started to read some of his interviews and started to learn a little more about his beliefs. I read somewhere that he knew about Christianity among other beliefs also that he played the role of Pontius Pilate in a movie called the last temptation of Christ.
When I saw the new videos he did before him passing, I must confess I got confused about what it meant and somehow was trying to get some sort of message, Perhaps I was looking to get something positive about it but couldn’t. I started searching and came across this article to try to have some insight on what those signs could mean. All of you here have shared very interesting things, and I respect everyone’s insights or opinions. I understand that a lot of us here in one way or another liked David Bowie or at least have been impacted by his music. I felt I related with some of you in that sense. And the reason I decided to write something it is because I felt compelled to share what I belief to be true. We have all been created by one God only, the one who created Heaven and earth, that is the one God who has the power to give life and to take it away. The Bible says “For God so love the world that sent his only begotten son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16. That is JesusChrist nobody could find sin in him or fault, he went to the cross of Calvary to give his life for you and me for the forgiveness of sin, for the salvation of our soul. He rose from the death on the third day. Jesus said I’m the only way the truth and the life no one can come to the the father but by me. Such deep love such selfless love. I Encourage all of you to read the Bible as well, it is not about perfection is about affection. Many think that being a Christian is he one who prays or goes to church or keeps the Ten Commandments. Being a Christian means to be a follower of JesusChrist. What I know to be true in my life is that in him I have hope is that through his Holy Spirit it reveals to my soul peace, and he didn’t come to condemn me but to show me love and concern for my soul. The difference I found between the Bible and other books is that I somehow the words that are written I that book make so much sense. And that in not about trusting in my strength but rather be led by His powerful scriptures. And because of that I made the choice to give my heart to JesusChrist the king of kings and Lord of Lords the one who gave his life for me and you. There is power in the blood of Jesus. No man has walked this earth with much compassion and love and humility. At the end of the day is about asking ourselves that question if we die today where would we go? No works will do, no fame will do, but a humble heart to him. Call upon His name, he has promise he will clean us from all unrighteousness and will give us hope and a reason to keep going. Our souls will live eternally the question is where are we going to to choose to live? We have free will, you are only a prayer away. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.- Proverbs 3:5. Many reject instruction,
1 Thessalonians 4:7 So, he who rejects this is not rejecting man but the God who gives His Holy Spirit to you. We all have questions, and we all are searching…. On God can fill that thirst. Many don’t come because they think they have to stop doing what their conscious tell them is wrong, Jesus says come as you are and the work is his not yours.

    • Aetheric energy is that with with the lowest vibration above physical matter, from low to high it is physical, aetheric, astral, etc. The aetheric realm closely mirrors the physical in appearance. It is here that ghosts sometimes get stuck thinking they are still on the physical plane, but physical beings can’t see or hear them.

      • So interesting! So do you think the aetheric realm looks like ours but is more dreamlike, or maybe cloudy and featureless? I’m thinking of some of the ideas of the underworld that crop up in mythology. Like dreary, joyless places like in Greek mythology, Sheol from the Old Testament, and I remember in Norse mythology Hel was supposed to rule the land of the dead, and everyone sat around a feast not caring about it at all.

      • It is described as being virtually identical with the physical world, but the light is not reflective, as in the physical, but generated from within, so slightly glowing, but not as much as the astral, of which there are various levels, some fantastically vivid. In addition to our physical bodies, we also have aethereal and astral bodies, both of which rise up out of our physical bodies when we sleep. It is the aetherial body which rises up a few feet above the physical body, tethered by an ‘umbilical’ of aetheric energy, absorbing aetherial energy while we sleep, in turn healing, regenerating, and energizing our physical bodies. The astral body can travel much further from the physical body.

Tortures and sacrifices where more a way to disciplinate the plebe than a need to feed the gods. Advanced civilizations have solved both problems.lack of energy and violence in order to reach other planets. They are more to feed sick, stupid and more terrestrial “spirits ” in a way.

The Blackstar indicates “The Church of Satan,” in other words what Aleister Crowley’s works spread into our energy fields. So yes, Satanic forces grabbing energy perhaps represented by what you called the scarecrow? (Not sure). The symbolism of buttons instead of eyes is extremely important to secret societies: it illustrates that the characters in the alternate world are puppets fabricated by the handler. Sewing buttons onto the eyes means that they would permanently become the handler’s puppet, who would then, as the movie Coraline states, “devour their soul”. Orm means serpent, which was originally Satan’s image before we hooved him and horned him. Ormulum is a twelfth-century work of biblical exegesis, written by a monk named Orm (or Ormin) and consisting of just under 19,000 lines of early Middle English verse. Ormulum is basically a combination of the word serpent (Satan) and mirrors. In Ormulum there is a star, and that is the star of Jesus, which the three brothers are able to find him with. The text is also written in metre, which could be related back to the book. I’m not sure, but raising something a metre seems to be connected to language. . .I see Bowie going back and forth between Satanic cult leader and puppet in bed. The dance reminds me quite a lot of a modern dance that was about the Holocaust. It’s a very violent dance that is probably invoking that this is one of the biggest Holocausts in some aspect, in our minds mirroring it everywhere. Satan. IN the Center of it ALL.

    • Bonnie. There are squares in the world who have so much power, real power, but what do they do with it? They get excited about war. They sign away the lives of young people and sacrifice them so that defense contractors can make a lot of money. Lives are ruined and suffering spreads. There are other squares who play weird games with money, squares who run banks, they push buttons and do the equivalent of printing money and devaluing the energy of a nation, and all the little people at the bottom have to pay the price – they have to work harder and harder to balance the books. Again, lives are ruined and suffering spreads. Squares do this, squares with power. Those squares have no interest in art and no creativity and no imagination. Now, Bonnie, do you really want to be one of those people who points to an *artist* and says, “Look! There is evil! There is Satan!”

Please, Bonnie. Don’t be that much of a square. Don’t watch a children’s movie and then imagine that you can judge an artist who has done something that no square can ever do.

The movement of the hands translated into sounds by the computer. Is as the germans that altered the frequency of the earth to make experiments. Although I feel this video is also an auto biography in a way where he is looking at his life and is now facing his morality. His last tribute from his death bed. It is truly a very beautiful work of art from a master artist.
A couple points that you can see are various characters in the video correspond to characters in his life. The space man, ziggy star dust, androgeny look….these come from his life. This is one of the many reasons I feel the album being a last letter and auto biography makes sense.

    • Now Carol, occult means “hidden” and all great art has hidden meaning. Something simple and pretty on the outside for the casual audience, and something complex and tucked away behind the scenes. How could it be any other way?

Also, Bowie was intensely interested in the occult from a very young age. If you thought otherwise, then keep thinking, keep looking, keep questioning, and put the insults away in a little drawer where you can get them later, because they aren’t needed today.

  46. Um. Everybody, meet your strawman. This is the last in a lifetime of work for Bowie. It is history connected and revealed. It is classic Bowie, but you have to follow the story from the beginning of his work all through the years to his last work. Every line of every song points to the same thing. Connect the dots of history (yes, religious history too) and decide for yourself, as there are combinations of information in his work, and most have more than one meaning. This is his gift to us. “Cause we’re lovers, and that is that.”

  49. Sadly many of the commentators here don’t understand the function of metaphor or allegory in mythology or popular culture. Taking the Bible literally is the surest indication you’ve missed the point, any more than you’d take the Bhagavad Gita literally. The hardline Christian dichotomy of good vs. evil is a sign of immature minds; as if in this universe there could ever be one without the other! That’s the central point of much mythology.
For example, in Season 6, Episode 3 of Star Trek Voyager, ‘Barge of the Dead,’ Chakotay points out to B’lanna Torres that an important function of mythic images in dreams or dream quests is to interpret what they mean to us as functions of consciousness, of clues to the next stage of our development, NOT literal beings. As Jung explained, the only demons that exist are those that arise from within us, from the Shadow side of the unconscious.

    Like

    • Wow, well said, Sean! You know, probably seeing the symbolic reality of gods and demons is probably enough to make someone a “wizard”, whereas thinking these things are literal, and thus missing the point, jumping at shadows, or becoming a puppet of those who control gods, would make someone a mere muggle, to steal a phrase from a modern writer.

Alright, alright, maybe that’s a stretch, but I just… I just want to be a wizard, okay?! I think going on a journey of self-discovery and incorporating the Shadow and unifying the fragmented pantheon of gods of the inner world and then being stripped of everything in the abyss of the unconscious is a pretty tough sell if you can’t be called a wizard once the journey is over, you know?

And it’s easy to hurt someone, just call them a rough name and then, pow, you’ve got one more unhappy person in a world full of unhappy people. It’s more difficult to spread joy to people, and maybe Bowie’s greatest, most divine form of magic was that he was able to spread joy to so many. And he still does, even though dead. Can you say the same for yourself?

Frauds of religion don’t give other people an excuse to be fraudulent in what they accept as true considering we are all human beings and are flawed. I find it pretty contradictory that someone would like to find fault and at the same time try to deny the reality of the sinfulness of mankind at the same time.

    • “Christ came to spread gnosis, or wisdom / enlightenment, rather than cleanse people of sins (to the Gnostics, sin was a state of ignorance).”

That’s a quote from the above piece. Pretty gentle words if you ask me. If that sounds anti-Christian to you, then you might want to consider the possibility that your ideas are extremely narrow, perhaps too fundamentalist. That’s great for Islam but Christianity has a history of philosophical debate that we don’t often bring up. I would suggest you look into the Gnostics and see what you think. Remember, they were persecuted, and most likely hunted down and exterminated. They had some interesting ideas, and if historical events had happened slightly differently, then you could have ended up some kind of fundamentalist Gnostic Christian, and maybe you would be leaving a comment on one of my inflammatory blog posts about an obscure sect of Christianity called Protestantism, which never really took off.

It’s an interesting thought experiment, isn’t it?

I know attack on the “fundamentals” of Christian belief, also I know a denial of reality, actually a contradiction when I see it. My views are not too narrow. Maybe yours are too broad. What is acceptable and not acceptable to you? You seem to pick and choose one thing over another just like a lot of people do. Sometimes people hit the nail on the head about what is right and wrong and sometimes people miss by miles.

Also considering that God exists and reality is only a certain way and, in a lot of ways, can only be a certain way because God’s character is fixed (ie. good or else you have no basis for talking about right and wrong), you can talk about how we could be talking about something else all that you want, but that is not how things are.

    • Of course I “pick and choose one thing over another just like a lot of people do.” That’s how the human mind works. Have you ever considered converting to Judaism? Christ made a new law but you keep the old one out of habit. You sanctify your own habits and worship your own ego. Good job.
